Irish-American chief medical resident at the Foxville Penitentiary, Niamh is an accomplished but increasingly burnt out doctor who struggles to find any time for herself outside of her duties at the prison.
When Niamh first got into medicine, perhaps she envisioned her career might have been very different. She did her residency at the prestigious Foxville General Hospital, and was a very promising young doctor, but she was headhunted by the prison after only a few years of practice. The pay was simply better, and by that point she'd just gotten married to her long-term girlfriend - the pair were hoping to start a family, and money had quickly become a priority in their lives. Though Niamh had misgivings and rather enjoyed working the ER ward, she couldn't say no to a superior paycheck in what she was promised would actually be a fairly low-stress environment, most of the time. The truth was anything but - Foxville Penitentiary is a very dangerous place to work, and the medical staff are often the first to be called in when things go wrong. Stabbings and beatings are only the half of it - perhaps the wounds she finds herself treating most frequently are severe acidic burns suffered by some poor soul who found themselves devoured and barely made it out intact. If they made it out at all. For a woman who has always been a compassionate person and a healer by nature, she finds herself frustrated with the frequent outbreaks of violence in the prison and the guard's laissez-faire attitude towards stopping it. Her complaints to the Warden have been largely ignored. Even though the prisoners are such dangerous, murderous individuals, she still feels bound by oath to do the best she can for them - she's a neutral party even amidst the tribalism that dominates life on the inside. There's no mistaking the fact that this job has taken a toll on her, though - Niamh works terribly long hours and barely gets to see her wife and their growing family. After several years without a pay raise, she's full of regrets - but what can she do? In her mind, if she were to up and quit, half her former patients might well be dead within a week.
